While working as a maid in the home of an English composer (David Thewlis) living in Italy, a beautiful young African medical student (Thandie Newton) finds herself besieged by her employer's fervent desires. All the while, on another continent, her husband remains locked behind bars for stirring up political tensions. Oscar-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor) also co-wrote the script for this understated drama.
