Multitalented filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini's groundbreaking biblical epic recounts the story of Jesus Christ (portrayed by Enrique Irazoqui, a Spanish economics student who had never acted before) as described in the Gospel of Matthew. Pasolini's matter-of-fact, neorealistic style and simplicity created controversy when the film was initially released in 1964, tracing Jesus's life from birth to crucifixion.
