In the early days of the Civil War, a tall and likable Texan (John Wayne) defeats the local schoolteacher (Walter Pidgeon) to become the new Kansas City marshal. But when they clash again over the love of the town beauty (Claire Trevor), the sheriff has an outlaw on his hands. Now, he must stop the ex-educator's renegade band of guerrillas from wreaking havoc on the surrounding territory in the name of the Confederacy.
