Abruptly killed in a car accident, minor-league sinner Max Devlin (Elliot Gould) finds himself in hell. Not content to spend eternity amid fire and brimstone, he strikes a deal with the devil's assistant, Barney Satin (Bill Cosby): If Max can convince three innocents to sell their souls, he gets to stay on earth. Complications arise, of course, in this devilishly funny comedy!
