In the Land of the War Canoes

  (1914)
In the Land of the Head Hunters
Edward S. Curtis, one of the 20th century's greatest photographers, devoted his life to documenting American Indians' rapidly disappearing way of life. In this 1914 silent film, he reenacts an ancient legend of love, war and revenge from Vancouver's Kwakiutl Indians. Painted war canoes, authentic costumes, tribal dancing, religious rituals, traditional music and Kwakiutl-recorded chants provide a fascinating glimpse into an ancient culture.
