White Wilderness

  (1958)
This Oscar-winning Disney documentary is notable for its stunning visuals -- as well as for creating the myth of lemming suicide. Shot in the Canadian Arctic, the film offers a vivid footage of winter vistas and wildlife. But the imported lemmings were used to create a staged migration scene, after which the filmmakers herded the rodents off a cliff into a river, resulting in the mistaken belief that the animals intentionally kill themselves.
