Kate Soffel (Diane Keaton) is a warden's wife who regularly visits her husband's jail, attempting to reform the convicts. But when she meets Ed Biddle (Mel Gibson), a young man who claims he's been wrongly convicted of murder, Soffel veers offcourse. Biddle leads the repressed Mrs. Soffel into temptation, convincing her to help him and his brother escape. Set in1901 Pittsburgh, this drama depicts a true story that shocked contemporary society.
