Director Sergei Eisenstein's classic, critically acclaimed epic chronicles the life of 16th century Russian tsar Ivan IV (Ivan Grozny, played by Nikolai Cherkasov). His 1547 coronation -- in which the former archduke of Moscow crowned himself Tsar -- is just one part of a life that witnessed wars, a marriage to Anastasia (Lyudmila Tselikovskaya), life-threatening illness, self-imposed exile and the petition of Muscovites that Ivan return to power.
