Director Govind Nihalani's searing political commentary examines the frustrations of being an Indian citizen while staying true to the Muslim faith -- an almost dichotomous social identity in that country -- through the eyes of a Hindi police officer, Dev Pratap Singh (Amitabh Bachchan). As Dev becomes more sensitive to the plight of the Muslims, his partner, Tejinder Khosla (Om Puri), grows more hateful, challenging Dev's newfound awareness.
