At Sotheby's auction house in New York City, Pierre (Robert Powell), an avant-garde theatre director, battles with his former lover and professional mentor Lilianna Zorska (Anne Baxter) for rights to produce a previously unknown play written by Jane Austen. The two also compete for the loyalties of a young actress, Ariadne (Sean Young, in her first screen role). Loosely based on a true story.
