Shyam Benegal directs this moving portrait of three generations of women and the consequences of their bid for independence. The teenage Salma (Rajeshwari Sachdev) is determined not to make the same mistakes her mother, Ghazala (Shabana Azmi), did when she was young. Ghazala's mother, Hasina (Surekha Sikri), meanwhile, urges her daughter to stay with her abusive husband. No member of the family is left untouched by the choices all three make.
