The Petrified Forest

  (1936)
Noted for Humphrey Bogart's breakthrough performance, this classic nail-biter teems with desperate characters in dangerous situations. When down-and-out Brit Alan (Leslie Howard) wanders into a remote diner, he charms the owner's daughter (Bette Davis), who dreams of living in Paris. Too unstable for love, Alan departs, but soon finds himself back at the diner, held prisoner -- along with several others -- by a desperado (Bogart).
