One of the classic horror films of the early silent era, this Faustian tale follows Balduin (Paul Wegener), a poor swordsman who makes a disastrous bargain with a sorcerer (John Gottowt) in order to satisfy his obsession with an unattainable countess (Grete Berger). The film, which features first-rate performances and high-caliber special effects for the day, holds an important place in the history of the acclaimed German horror genre.
