Charles Perrault's fantastical story is given new life in this 1971 classic about a princess (Catherine Deneuve) who must go into hiding after her mother, the queen, makes a dying wish that she be replaced by the most beautiful woman in all the land, who turns out to be her daughter. Pursued by her lecherous father, the king, the young princess turns to a "fairy godmother" of sorts, who changes her into a donkey. But can the spell keep her safe?
