Vidas Secas

One of the first films from Brazil's Cinema Novo, this classic tale (based on a novel by Graciliano Ramos) about a downtrodden family traces their pitiful existence as workers on a wealthy man's ranch, where they toil all day only to retire every evening to an abandoned house. Just as their fortunes start looking up, fate steps in to beat them down even further -- and a run-in with the law threatens to end their livelihood forever.
