The Green Pastures

  (1936)
Featuring an all-black cast and moving the tales from the promised land to the Deep South, this landmark film retells some of the Old Testament's best-known stories as visualized in rural black children's imaginations. Rex Ingram's tour-de-force performance in three roles (De Lawd, Adam and Hezdrel) dominates the movie, while Eddie Anderson plays a laid-back ferryboat skipper who argues with De Lawd about bringing liquor along on the ark.
