When an African American GI (Harry Baird) cashes in a three-day pass for the weekend, he meets beautiful young Frenchwoman Miriam (Nicole Berger) and falls desperately in love -- only to find that a racist superior has demoted him for mixing with a white girl. In his career-making directorial debut, Melvin Van Peebles used a grant from the French Cinema Center to tell this story, which is based on his novel, La Permission.
