When a sympathetic Union colonel (Jack Holt) helps a Confederate officer (John Boles) escape from custody to visit his family, they're both arrested and sentenced to be executed. Now, their only hope lies in the efforts of the Confederate man's charming daughter, Virgie (Shirley Temple), and loyal servant, Uncle Billy (Bill "Bojangles" Robinson), who've decided to take their case straight to President Lincoln (Frank McGlynn Sr.).
