At a San Francisco charity event, lovely socialite Petulia Danner (Julie Christie) sets her cap for newly divorced doctor Archie Bollen (George C. Scott) and embarks on a schizophrenic romance. The trouble is, she's already married ... to the handsome but physically abusive David (Richard Chamberlain). Joseph Cotten and Shirley Knight play supporting roles in this romantic drama helmed by Richard Lester.
