Influenced by the rise to power of Uruguay's 1970s dictatorship and the opposing leftist guerilla group Tupamaro, Costa-Gavras's gritty drama follows the kidnapping and interrogation of U.S. official Michael Santore. Nominated by the 1974 Golden Globes as Best Foreign Language Film, the film stars Yves Montand and Renato Salvatori. Costa-Gavras's films are notable for being inspired by true events of political injustice.
