In this faithful adaptation of the Albert Camus novel, Marcello Mastroianni plays Arthur Meursault, a man completely alienated from his society and surroundings whose lack of feeling that eventually leads to murder. During Meursault's subsequent trial, it is this lack of feeling -- rather than the act itself -- that outrages onlookers in this Golden Globe nominee from Italian director Luchino Visconti (Death in Venice).
