Zhuangzhuang Tian's lushly produced biopic chronicles the remarkable life of China's Wu Qingyuan, a 20th-century master of go, the East's version of chess. The teenage Wu (Chen Chang) moves to go-obsessed Japan, and so begins his rise to the top of the game. But living as a foreigner in a war-torn country tests Wu's political allegiance and spiritual strength even as he perfects his winning strategies.
