Les Miserables

  (1935)
Richard Boleslawski directs this faithful cinematic rendition of Victor Hugo's timeless story about a man condemned to a life of suffering despite paying his dues after stealing a loaf of bread. In 18th-century France, Jean Valjean (Fredric March) becomes, against all odds, a factory owner after he's released from jail and starts anew. But a former prison guard, Inspector Javert (Charles Laughton), threatens to reveal his identity.
