In director Clarence Brown's engaging melodrama, Lionel Barrymore gives an Oscar-winning performance as tosspot San Francisco attorney Stephen Ashe, who successfully defends mobster Ace Wilfong (Clark Gable) against a murder rap. After the case -- to Ashe's dismay -- his free-spirited daughter (Norma Shearer) takes up with Wilfong, and their dangerous liaison soon leads to a killing and another trial. Leslie Howard plays Shearer's jilted fiancé.
