A Great Day in Harlem / The Spitball Story

  (1998)
Director Jean Bach constructed a remarkable documentary around a renowned 1958 photograph. Taken for Esquire magazine, the photo looked like a class picture featuring 57 jazz legends who have never been together: Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and scads of others. Through interviews and archival footage, Bach recreates the day the photo was snapped and reveals many of the stories it tells.
