In chaotic 1930s Shanghai, as the country faces an imminent war with the Japanese, an American doctor is sent to treat a seriously ill man. Because of the political climate, however, all kinds of complications arise. The doctor gets wrapped up in the turmoil and soon discovers that his patient isn't exactly who he thought he was.
