With her parents desperate for money and her siblings on the brink of starvation, eldest daughter Shalini (Mumtaz) takes a job to help the family make ends meet -- only to find herself slowly forced into the dark world of prostitution. Moving to the big city, she continues to send cash home while keeping up appearances, until she returns for a visit that reveals more to her family than she intended. K. Balachander directs this wrenching drama.
