Laura (Kellie Martin), a neglected deaf girl, is routinely beaten by her father, but her case falls through the cracks of the system because her family never taught her sign language and she can't identify her attacker to others. Pam Willis (JoBeth Williams), a social worker with her own history of abuse, decides to help her seek justice. But before the two can take on the courts, Laura must learn to communicate with the rest of the world.
