Three months after his best friend's assassination, French gangster Roch Siffredi (Alain Delon) traces the crime to a ring of thugs led by Milanese industrialist Giovanni Volpone (Riccardo Cucciolla). To exact his revenge, Roch declares war on Volpone's turf. But navigating the politics of 1930s Marseilles -- and the town's rotating lineup of police chiefs (André Falcon and Daniel Ivernel) -- proves a difficult task.
