World War II is raging in Europe, but in neutral Sweden, 15-year-old Stig (Johan Widerberg) finds himself falling in love with his 37-year-old teacher, Viola (Marika Lagercrantz). Ignored by her hard-drinking husband (Tomas von Brömssen), Viola is vulnerable and plunges headlong into the affair. But when Stig begins to court a girl his own age, Viola erupts in a fit of rage. The drama received an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film.
