After discovering she's unable to bear his child, Pushpa's (Sharmila Tagore) husband abandons her. She seeks a new life as a courtesan in Calcutta, where karma takes over and romance blossoms with Anand (Rajesh Khanna), a rich aristocrat. In this story of loss, love and redemption, Pushpa's past life of sorrow becomes a faded memory as her new love grows, and she finds hope and purpose by providing caring and guidance to Nandu, a neglected child.
