Academy Award winner Jane Campion directs this true story about Janet Frame (Kerry Fox), an excruciatingly shy girl who escaped a dysfunctional upbringing and eight years in a mental institution to become New Zealand's premier poet. The film unfolds as a trilogy chronicling Frame's childhood and teenage years; her time as a teacher and her incarceration; and her years spent as a writer traveling on a grant in Europe and finding her first love.
