Frances and Evelyn McEllany (Patricia Neal and Shelley Winters), aging sisters who have spent most of their adult lives together, are forced to confront jealousy and painful emotions when one of them falls in love. The judgmental Evelyn can't understand what the sweet-tempered Frances sees in Max Chin (Mako), an Asian auto mechanic who makes her sister laugh. But Evelyn is concerned that their budding relationship will leave her out in the cold.
