Upon returning from a decade-long Amazon expedition, entomologist William Adamson (Mark Rylance) has trouble reintegrating into Victorian society, until he is taken in by an aristocratic family whose civilized veneer belies some illicit behavior. This dark, and at times sexually explicit, adaptation of A.S. Byatt's novel chronicles Adamson's marriage to beautiful Eugenia Alabastar (Patsy Kensit) and his relations with her questionable household.
