To escape the Nazis, Dr. Ravic (Charles Boyer) flees to Paris, where he practices medicine under an assumed name. When he prevents a depressed nightclub singer named Joan (Ingrid Bergman) from committing suicide, he develops a connection with her. The two begin to fall in love just as the war begins to tear Europe apart, leading to romantic and political complications. Charles Laughton and Louis Calhern co-star.
