Bab El-Oued City

  (1994)
Sick of the blaring noise, a young baker (Hassan Abidou) working the night shift in Algiers' run-down Bab El-Oued district destroys a loudspeaker broadcasting Islamic fundamentalist propaganda, and his act of defiance unleashes a storm. The oppressors promptly tighten their stranglehold on the neighborhood as they search for the culprit. This intense film provocatively explores the dangers inherent in all forms of intolerance and fundamentalism.
