When Ashok (Dilip Kumar) moves to Madhuban to serve as the new postmaster, he unwittingly charms two women: Bela (Nargis), the former postmaster's daughter, and Usha (Munawar Sultana), the daughter of the town's biggest zamindar. At first, Bela is fickle. But when she realizes that Usha is in love with Ashok, she sets a destructive plan in motion to ensure she keeps Ashok for herself. But will she remain selfish … or have a change of heart?
