At the close of World War II, Virginia "Rusty" Dickinson returns to England from a five-year stretch in America to live with her mother, Peggy (Sarah Lancashire), and the brother she never knew. The war years have changed the family, and when the man of the house (Adrian Lukis) returns from the front, domestic tensions only increase. The postwar family saga is based on the novel by Michelle Magorian.
