To elude the police, small-time thief Shyamu (Amitabh Bachchan) poses as an ailing poet named Deepak. Soon, he receives respect and admiration like he's never known, inspiring him to quit his life of crime. When the real Deepak dies, Shyamu must decide whether to permanently assume his identity or reveal himself as a fraud. What's more, he's fallen for a woman named Mala (Mumtaz), but will she still love him if she finds out who he truly is?
