In prison for murdering the wife of her former lover, Kalyani (Nutan) falls for the doctor at the jail, who's smitten and dismisses her treacherous past. But when her past comes back to haunt her, the future becomes unclear. Released three years before his death, Bimal Roy's classic drama is widely considered one of his best, winning Best Actress, Best Director and Best Film at the 1964 Filmfare Awards (India's equivalent to the Oscars).
