At the beginning of his legendary career, Paul Newman shines in two sports-themed TV movies from the 1950s. In Bang the Drum Slowly, baseball pitcher Henry Wiggen (Newman) keeps secret the illness of his friend and teammate Bruce Pierson (Albert Salmi). In The Battler, Newman is an aspiring boxer who encounters a strange cast of characters while hitchhiking. The film, directed by Arthur Penn, was adapted from an Ernest Hemingway short story.
