Sarju (Farooq Shaikh) and Shabnam (Supriya Pathak) are in love, but their hopes for marriage are shattered when Shabnam's father promises her to a wealthy man -- prompting Sarju to challenge tradition. Confronting the antiquated customs that have held back Indian women for ages, writer-director Sagar Sarhadi's poignant drama became more than just a movie when, shortly after its release, "bride selling" became banned in several Indian regions.
