Director Claire Denis loosely adapted Herman Melville's Billy Budd and transferred the tale from the sea to the sparse landscape of East Africa's Djibouti. Sgt. Galoup (Denis Lavant), a French Foreign Legion officer, is intimidated by the arrival of a new recruit, Sentain (Gregoire Colin). When Galoup's commander, Forestier (Michel Subor), shows Sentain extreme favoritism, Galoup recklessly acts out on his irrational emotion.
