With scenes arranged in reverse chronological order, playwright Harold Pinter's semi-autobiographical filmed play dissects the nature of an adulterous affair between Emma (Patricia Hodge) and Jerry (Jeremy Irons), best friend to Emma's husband Robert (Ben Kingsley). Set several months apart, the scenes reveal the stages of their relationship from their initial attraction to the elaborate deceptions they concoct to keep Robert in the dark.
