Fugitive small-time crooks Francesca (Doris Dowling) and Walter (Vittorio Gassman) hide out in northern Italy, where Francesca gets a job among the peasants in the rice fields. Soon, her sultry co-worker Silvana (Silvana Mangano) falls for Walter and his criminal lifestyle. The Italian neorealist movement gets an unexpected dose of sex appeal in this Oscar-nominated drama, which made an instant star of Mangano, a former Miss Rome.
