A year after the end of Spain's fractious civil war, Elena (Maribel Verdú) struggles to keep up appearances. Yet, all the while, she's harboring a dangerous secret: Her Republican schoolteacher husband (Javier Cámara) has been living with her and her children all along. Complications ensue when her son and daughter's teacher (Raúl Arévalo), who fought in the war as an inexperienced soldier, develops an unhealthy obsession with Elena.
