In early 20th century Vienna, composer Gustav Mahler (Jonathan Pryce) meets his muse and mate, Alma Schindler (Sarah Wynter), a fellow musician. When the pair marries, Alma gives up her composing to concentrate on raising their family. But when a child dies, Alma embarks on a journey of self-discovery. After meeting men like Walter Gropius (Simon Verhoeven) and Oskar Kokoschka (Vincent Perez), she realizes that her passion for life remains fiery.
