Broken Blossoms

  (1936)
Lucy (Dolly Haas) lives under the thumb of her father (Arthur Margetson), a washed-up boxer who abuses her. After a particularly brutal beating, Lucy flees and ends up in the care of Chinese immigrant Chen (Emlyn Williams), a devout Buddhist hardened by poverty and prejudice. Romance blooms, but the specter of Lucy's bigoted father threatens to destroy their love. John Brahm directs this 1936 remake (with sound) of D.W. Griffith's silent classic.
