Hector Babenco's disturbing drama examines the deplorable conditions in Brazil's Sao Paulo House of Detention, one of the largest and most severely overcrowded prisons in South America -- conditions that led a deadly uprising in 1992. When a doctor (Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos) visits to address the spread of HIV in the prison, he develops a connection with the inmates. But simmering hostilities eventually boil over, resulting in the fatal riot.
