Blacklisted director Edward Dmytryk adapted this affecting neorealist movie from the 1939 novel by Pietro Di Donato. The lives of Italian-American immigrants struggling to find work in the construction industry around the time of the Great Depression is the focus, and the story is a gritty, compelling drama that pulls no punches in its portrayal of urban living.
